I hope you have had a lovely time over the summer and I am sure you are now ready to start the new school year, so welcome to Year 1!

I am looking forward to getting to know you and working together so that we have a very exciting year. I hope that you enjoy the new challenges and approaches to learning that Year 1 has to offer!

Our first topic is on Oceans and Seas.

Transition from Reception to Year 1

Our aim is to ensure that the children experience a smooth transition from the Foundation Stage to Key Stage One. The Year 1 curriculum builds upon and extends the experiences that children have had in Reception. Learning through play will continue to be an important part of the school day, and the children will gradually be eased into more formal learning as the year goes on so that they remain motivated, enthused and eager learners. Please don’t hesitate to come and see me either before or after school if you have any questions or queries.

Reading in Year 1...

Whole school reading time is from 9.00am to 9.30am daily and we always welcome volunteers to listen to the children read. If you can spare 30 minutes in a morning, and you would like to do this, please let me know. It doesn’t have to be on a regular basis and it really helps the children to have regular daily practise. Let me know if you would like to join us.

Please make sure your children bring their book bags, reading books and diaries to school every day. There are also extra reading books available in the shared area and the children may borrow book browser books too (just one at a time please).

General Reminders…

  • The children will be doing PE on Mondays and Tuesdays. Please ensure your child has their indoor and outdoor PE kit, including pumps or trainers in school and that all items are clearly labelled.  If your child has pierced ears, they need to be able to remove their own earrings for PE or bring in tape to cover them.
  • Homework Books will be sent home on Wednesdays. Please return them to the yellow box by Monday so that I can update them.

Please check that all your child’s possessions are named so any found items can be reunited with their owners.

Star of the week…

Each Friday a child will be selected as the ‘Star of the Week’. This child will bring home our class fox and a diary for the weekend. They will be asked to take the fox on their adventures over the weekend and record what they do in the diary. If any pictures with the fox are taken, these would be a lovely addition also. Please return this to school on Monday so your child can show and share their weekend news with the class.
