Kirklees LA Become a School Governor

DFE School Performance Tables

Every school must have a governing body. The membership varies according to the type of school. A Governing Body is made up of a group of volunteers, from different walks of life who give freely of their time and expertise for the benefit of our school. A governor is usually appointed for a period of four years and may then be eligible for re-appointment or re-election.

Governors are responsible for making sure our school provides a good quality education. They also promote effective ways of teaching and learning when setting the school aims and policies. They do this together with the Headteacher, who is responsible for the day-to-day management of the school.

Governors support and challenge the Headteacher by gathering views, asking questions and deciding what's best for our school.  Governors are not there to rubber stamp decisions.

The governing body’s main role is to help raise standards of achievement.

  • It is accountable for the performance of the school to parents and the wider community

  • It plans the school’s future direction

  • It selects the headteacher

  • It makes decisions on the school’s budget and staffing

  • It makes sure the national curriculum is taught

  • It decides how the school can encourage pupils’ spiritual, moral and social development

  • It makes sure the school provides for all its pupils, including those with special needs.

Governors are asked to register any relevant business interests they have and details of any other educational establishments they govern. They must set out any relationships between governors and members of the school staff, including spouses, partners and relatives. This Register of Interests must be published on our website. Our governors have signed up to a Code of Conduct.

The Annual Meeting of the Governing Body is held in September each year. There is then a full governing body meeting each half term, with any further meetings convened as required.

Governors also serve on committees which meet twice a term, or as required. These committees have delegated areas of responsibility and advise the full Governing Body of recommended actions on specific issues. The 4 committees are: Early Years, Teaching, Learning & Assessment, Personal Development, Behaviour & Welfare and Leadership & Management. Outcomes (Attainment & Progress) are the responsibility of the full governing body.

Our Chair and Vice-Chair have been elected to serve for a year, until end of August 2016.

Minutes of Governors' meetings are available to parents on request from the School Office.

Parents may bring any important matters to the attention of the Governing Body. They should do so either by speaking in person to a parent governor or by writing a letter addressed to Mr Joshua Beckett, Chair of Governors; this will be forwarded to the Chair via the school office.
