Physical Education

At Skelmanthorpe First and Nursery School we aim to provide a physical education curriculum that inspires all pupils to succeed and excel in competitive sport and other physically demanding activities and to lead healthy and active lives. We will provide regular opportunities for pupils to compete in sport and other activities that build character and help to embed values such as fairness and respect.

Key Stage 1

In Key Stage 1 pupils will be taught to develop fundamental movement skills including running, jumping, throwing and catching, as well as developing balance, agility and co-ordination.

Key Stage 2

In Key Stage 2 pupils will continue to apply and develop their range of skills. They will play competitive games, for example, basketball, cricket, football, hockey, rounders and tennis and apply their skills to athletics, outdoor and adventurous activities, dance and gymnastics.

Swimming and water safety

All Year 4 pupils are taught swimming. They are taught to swim confidently over a distance of at least 25m and to use a range of strokes. Pupils may also be taught self-rescue.
